Ignite the Right is a project founded in 2022 by a coalition of researchers and collectives dedicated to documenting the individuals who participated in the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. While many participants had been identified in the years following the event, there was no centralized effort to systematically catalog them. Ignite the Right was created to fill that gap.

Since our founding, we have compiled hundreds of verified identities and images into an organized, searchable archive. Our work builds on years of anti-fascist research and collaborative investigation. Through sustained identification efforts, many individuals involved in the rally have faced public accountability and real-world consequences for their actions.

Last year marked the eighth anniversary of the violent Unite the Right white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. Thousands attended the neo-Nazi gathering on August 11-12, 2017. While some participants have already been identified, our work continues with the goal of identifying the remaining individuals. Keep reading…
